Available methylation tests
Impaired methylation diagnostic markers
- Irregular methionine, cysteine, S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), homocysteine and cystathionine plasma levels
- Homocysteine plasma level above normal range
- Histamine plasma level above normal range
- High or low basophil blood count level
- Mutation of either or both of the C677T and A1298C variants of the MTHFR gene
Main diagnostic tests
- Methylation profile test (Biolab appointments only)
- Homocysteine plasma test
- Histamine plasma test
- Basophil blood count test
- MTHFR gene test - C677T and A1298C (saliva)
Please note: You do not necessarily need to undergo all of the tests to diagnose whether or not you have any methylation issues/impairment. The methylation profile test analyses specific amino acids which are key substances involved in methylation, this test is only available to undergo at Biolab's location in London though. The MTHFR gene saliva test analyses potential mutations in the C677T and A1298C variants of the gene. These gene variants play a vital role in methylation. An increase of histamine and homocysteine can occur from methylation problems. Sometimes both histamine and homocysteine can actually be within range though when someone is undermethylated, being undermethylated does not always mean that you will have high histamine and homocysteine levels but the risk is greater.
